Gardaí Arrest Suspect in Roundwood Hit-and-Run That Left Cyclist Seriously Injured

Gardaí have arrested a man suspected of being behind the wheel of a Seat vehicle that struck a cyclist in Roundwood, Co Wicklow, on Sunday, September 6th, before fleeing the scene.

The cyclist sustained serious injuries in the collision, but was assisted at the scene by passing motorists and motorcyclists. The swift action of witnesses, who provided information and descriptions of the vehicle to gardaí, proved crucial in tracking down the suspect.

Photographs released by An Garda Síochána show the significant damage to the vehicle involved and highlight the remote nature of the location where the incident occurred in Roundwood.

Following enquiries, the vehicle was identified and located in Tallaght, where it was seized by gardaí. A male was subsequently arrested and detained for questioning.

Garda Statement: "Gardaí have arrested a male in relation to a serious injury collision in Roundwood on Sunday, September 6th, following which a vehicle failed to remain at the scene. The collision involved a cyclist, who sustained serious injuries but was assisted by passing motorists and motorcyclists while witnesses provided valuable information to gardaí, which led to the apprehending of the male. Following enquiries, the vehicle involved was identified and located in Tallaght, where it was seized. A male was subsequently arrested. Gardaí would like to thank all those who stopped to assist and provided information and footage which helped with the investigation."

This arrest comes just days after a separate fatal hit-and-run incident in Co Clare.

On Friday, September 5th, 16-year-old Bryan Lowe from Cloonlara and Westbury was killed when struck by a car near his home while riding an e-bike. The driver fled the scene, and despite efforts to save the teenager, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two incidents have reignited concerns about road safety and the importance of remaining at the scene of collisions to render assistance to injured parties.
