Caution Urged On The Coast As Storm Austen Approaches

Swimmers are advised to avoid entering the water in stormy weather, or when strong winds, waves or currents make conditions unsafe.

Cold Water. Rough Seas. Fading Light.

Three reasons to stop and think before entering the water this October Bank Holiday weekend. Wicklow rescue services are issuing a safety plea to anyone planning coastal, inland water or outdoor activities in the coming days.

With the clocks going back, daylight hours are shortening and water temperatures are dropping. Add a storm warning to the mix, with strong winds and heavy rain expected, and the safety risk along the coast is ramped up further. The Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and RNLI are urging caution on the coast as Storm Austen approaches.

The appeal comes as the three organisations reflect on the busiest summer on record for search and rescue incidents. They have thanked frontline emergency service teams, lifeguards, and rescue volunteers for their work during a particularly demanding season.

This weekend, the public is advised to be especially careful around exposed cliffs, seafronts and piers.

Advice for coastal walkers

The public is advised to be especially careful around exposed cliffs, seafronts and piers. Those heading out for walks should:

  • Check weather and tide times before setting out
  • Be aware of the risk of being cut off by incoming tides
  • Keep well back from cliff edges and unstable ground
  • Carry a fully charged mobile phone and let someone know their plans

Advice for swimmers

Swimmers should avoid entering the water in stormy weather, or when strong winds, waves or currents make conditions unsafe. With the lifeguard season over and daylight fading earlier, people should choose locally recognised safe swimming areas, avoid swimming alone and be out of the water before dark.

As water temperatures fall, swimmers are best to shorten their swims and be mindful of the risks of cold-water shock, hypothermia and reduced swimming ability. A wetsuit, brightly coloured swim cap and tow float are also recommended.
