A number of tough new measures have been proposed in the final consultation document for Ireland’s nitrates derogation.
According to the Farmer’s Journal, they include a shorter period for slurry spreading, a ban on soiled water spreading during the closed period and new fertiliser limits.
The report says the October 15th deadline for slurry spreading could be brought forward to September under the draft proposals.
It’s also understood new bands for organic nitrogen rates per cow will be proposed, while a 10% cut in the upper limit of chemical nitrogen use is also likely.
For tillage farmers, the rules around green cover will be strengthened, with cultivation for regeneration and cover crops generally required.
The Irish Farmer’s Journal says while the new measures are part of the review of Ireland’s nitrates derogation, it's understood the proposed rules will apply to all farmers.
