Wicklow Farmers Praised & Reminded About Vigilant Pesticide Use

Farmers and landowners in Wicklow are being urged to remain vigilant with pesticides 

The National Pesticides and Drinking Water Action Group has issued a reminder as the spraying season ends.

It says just one drop can contaminate a water source, with a warning that wet autumn days increase the risk of run-off into rivers and streams.

Dr Aidan Moody who chairs the group is praising farmers for their work reducing pesticide use, but says people should always ask if spraying is necessary at all, and if it is, to follow best practice.

Users are reminded to check product labels, keep buffer zones near watercourses, and watch the forecast before spraying.

Local farm advisors and the Department of Agriculture can offer more information. Key messages include:

• Only use pesticides when necessary and after considering all alternative control methods.
• Always read and follow the product label.
• MCPA products are not allowed to be used from the end of September (or the end of October depending on the particular product) through to the beginning of March.
• Do not use pesticides if rain is forecast in the next 48 hours.
• Keep well clear of watercourses, drains, wells and springs, and observe the correct no-spray buffer zones.
• Avoid spills. Never fill or wash sprayers beside drains or on concrete where run-off can occur, and triple-rinse containers into the sprayer.
• Dispose of unused product and containers safely.
• Never fill a sprayer directly from a watercourse.
