Health Minister Wicklow TD Simon Harris will bring plans to cabinet on Wednesday to return to the old health board system from before the HSE was founded.
Under the cross party 10 year plan for the health service Slaintecare more power is due to be given to six regional health boards in a major shake up of the HSE.
It's smilar to the model that was scrapped when the HSE was founded.
The idea at that time was to streamline services to a central point.
Now more power will be given back to regional areas.
