Teacher Shortage Solution Comes To Wicklow Schools

A major new platform aimed at solving substitute teacher shortages has arrived in Wicklow.

ClassCover, an Australian-based booking system, has expanded its Irish pilot to include eight counties—and Wicklow is one of them.

The move comes as schools across the region continue to struggle with accessing substitute teachers at short notice.

Figures paint a worrying picture: a recent survey by the Irish National Teacher Organisation found that 60% of schools couldn't source a substitute when needed.

The knock-on effect has been significant, with schools forced to split classes and disrupt learning.

How it works

ClassCover lets school principals see available substitute teachers and special needs assistants in real time through a single booking system.

The platform gives schools a clear record of every booking and even allows them to attach lesson plans so substitutes know what they're walking into.

For substitute teachers and SNAs, it's straightforward: signing up is free, and they control which schools can see their profiles.

Free for pilot schools

Wicklow schools taking part in the pilot programme will get full access free for two months.

Those outside the pilot can access a 'lite' version at no cost.

The expansion covers Wicklow, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Meath, Louth and Kildare.
