Brian Brennan is an active participant in the 80th UN General Assembly as part of the Irish delegation. He has highlighted the conflict in Gaza and the need for a ceasefire.
Wicklow-Wexford Fine Gael TD Brian Brennan is attending the ongoing 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York as part of the Irish Government Delegation.
The assembly will bring together global leaders with the spectre of death and war in Gaza and Ukraine to the forefront of delegate concerns.
Deputy Brennan is a often outspoken advocate for peace on Gaza, amid the wanton killing of children in the seeminglt ceasless ongoing conflict.
Speaking from New York, Brennan told East Coast FM:
“Over the past two years, the images we’ve seen of suffering and displacement are impossible to ignore. In July, I travelled to Egypt to meet NGOs and Palestinian people displaced or injured by the conflict, many of whom have lost everything.”
The conference will reaffirm international commitments to a two-state solution and seek to mobilize support for its implementation.
Ten countries are formally recognising Palestinian statehood, including Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta, Britain, San Marino, and France, much to the chagrin of Israel who've branded the event as a 'circus.'
The General Debate today will see global leaders outline their positions on interconnected international issues including addressed from U.S. President Donald Trump, with Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Wicklow TD Tánaiste Simon Harris also attending, alongside representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Brennan called for urgent action to stop the conflict and to protect the civilians caught up in the ongoing scenes of distress.
“We must demand a ceasefire, and the EU must play a stronger role in achieving this, including reviewing the EU/Israel trade agreement. I’ve met so many constituents who want a resolution to this atrocity. People are watching innocent civilians, medics, journalists, and children being killed daily—we must do everything we can to stop it.”
