The HSE has confirmed that 20 beds are to remain open at the District Hospital in Wicklow Town and will be used to care for older people from mid and South Wicklow, leaving acute Care settings.
Sections of the hospital have been put to use as a Covid 19 test centre in recent months after the facility closed in 2010, following a report from HIQA which outlined works that were needed at the site.
Sinn Fein TD in Wicklow John Brady has welcomed the news, but has called for Health Minister Stephen Donnelly to put adequate funding in place to ensure the day care service can resume as quickly as possible.
