The works, planned to commence over the next couple of months, will focus on the final 400m section at the Bray end of the road where higher curbs and a new footpath will be constructed.
New higher safety barriers will also be installed and the camber of the road will be changed making it safer to drive along.
There have been fears for motorists' safety in recent months after a crash barrier on a section of the road had deteriorated significantly.
In 2004, two people lost their lives in an accident in the area.
Wicklow Sinn Féin TD John Brady and Councillor Dermot O’Brien have welcomed the development saying once complete will make it safer for everyone.
