A new survey by the Irish Business Against litter group shows that just 40 per cent of 32 coastal areas surveyed were deemed clean to “European norms”.
The figures are an improvement on the previous survey two years ago, when just 16 per cent passed the European standards.
However two locations in Wicklow that were surveyed fared quite well in the survey. Both Brittas Bay beach and Bray Seafront were among thirteen locations regarded as clean to European Norms. Dun Laoghaire Harbour , Curracloe beach and Kilmore Quay harbour also feature in the top list.
Cork Harbour and White Bay in Cork were recorded as the most heavily littered areas.
