Over half of the litter on Ireland's streets is cigarette butts.
The amount of litter on the ground would be halved, if people disposed of cigarette butts properly.
The latest National Litter Pollution Monitoring System has found that cigarettes account for 54 per cent of Ireland's litter.
Other key findings include pedestrians being the worst litter bugs, there was a 5 per cent increase in areas that were unpolluted and the amount of chewing gum litter on the ground has halved since 2016.
