Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland urge everyone to 'Unite to Turn the Tide

July has been one of the busiest months in years for rescue services, with warm weather bringing more people to Wicklow beaches, rivers and lakes.

Warm weather and a busy July is prompting a water safety appeal.  World Drowning Prevention Day is observed annually on July 25th, to raise awareness of drowning prevention and promote lifesaving interventions. This year's theme, 'Unite to Turn the Tide', aims to reduce drowning deaths by 35% by 2035.

The Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are joining forces and urging people to stay safe around water in what has become one of the busiest months in recent years for rescue services.

So far this year, 37 people have tragically lost their lives in Irish waters. A sharp rise in people visiting beaches, rivers and lakes, resulted in more than 1,700 Coast Guard incidents nationwide.  A total of 385 lives were saved and over 1,600 people assisted.

Anyone planning activities on or near the water is advised to be prepared, understand the risks and take simple steps to help ensure everyone returns home safely.

Tips and advice include:

  • Check weather forecasts and tide times before heading out.
  • If walking along the shoreline, remain alert to rising tides.
  • Choose lifeguarded beaches where possible, always swim with others, and stay within your depth.
  • Be aware of rip currents - they can rapidly carry even strong swimmers away from shore.
  • Warm weather does not mean safe water. Cold water can cause cold-water shock, significantly increasing the risk of drowning. Enter the water slowly to allow your body to adjust.
  • Ensure children are kept under constant, uninterrupted supervision near water.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast, or think they are in trouble dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
