Nearly 46,000 people abandoned their visit to an emergency department last year, without completing their treatment.
According to freedom of information figures, the highest amount was in the Mater Hospital in Dublin, at over 5,200.
Some patients were frustrated by long delays, going elsewhere for treatment, or back home.
