Short-Term Extension Of Fuel Excise Cuts For Wicklow Families And Businesses

Petrol at the pump

Tanaiste says extending measures is to offset 'cliff-edge' fall for people and businesses while monitoring inflation

Motorists and businesses in Wicklow are set to benefit in the short term from the Government’s decision to extend reduced fuel excise rates until September, before a phased unwinding of the measures later in the year.

The move is designed to prevent a sharp jump in petrol and diesel prices at the pump, at a time when global energy costs have been easing but remain unpredictable.

Perspective from Wicklow families and businesses

For households in Wicklow, particularly commuters travelling daily to Dublin or across the county, the extension is likely to be seen as a continuation of temporary relief on already high transport costs.

Small businesses — including delivery firms, tradespeople, and rural operators — are also heavily dependent on fuel. Many have faced volatile margins over the past two years, with diesel costs feeding directly into prices for goods and services.

While the extension offers short-term stability, there is also awareness that the supports are temporary, and that costs could edge up again once the measures are gradually withdrawn.

What it means - In practical terms:

  • Petrol and diesel prices are expected to stay more stable over the summer

  • Households and commuters avoid an immediate price spike

  • Businesses get a clearer planning window on operating costs

  • Inflation pressures may be slightly reduced in the short term

However, the Government is signalling that this is a managed wind-down rather than a permanent cut, meaning some upward pressure on fuel prices is likely later in the year.

Simon Harris said:

So this morning we'll bring clarity to the situation regarding excise for petrol and diesel. I'm very conscious of the fact that petrol and diesel prices are thankfully falling. I'm also very conscious of the fact though that there can't be a cliff edge for motorists, there can't be a cliff edge for people, there can't be a cliff edge for businesses and we've always adopted an approach in government that we wanted to be nimble and agile and that we would look at situations as they arose, take stock and make the right balanced decision and I think today by extending the current set of measures in relation to excise out till the 1st of September and then on a phased basis unwinding them I think has a number of benefits.

One it brings clarity, two it helps hard-pressed families and businesses and thirdly from a broader economic point of view it also helps manage inflation because we've estimated in the Department of Finance that the package of measures we put in place was actually helping suppress growth in inflation. So this is the right appropriate thing to do, it provides clarity, it provides a timeline and it's a balanced proportionate response.”
