An Bord Pleanála are due to receive plans to expand the Blessington Greenway early next year.
The greenway in West Wicklow currently links the town of Blessington with Russborough House.
Under the plans the route will run for 42 km and cover a number of villages including Ballyknockan, Valleymount and Lacken.
The project received a boost this week after Transport Infrastructure Ireland allocated €5 million in funding for 2022.
It's expected Wicklow County Council will start work on the new amenity between four and six months after the planning board give approval.
