Wicklow has seven points to spare over Donegal in their hurling league encounter over the weekend and have one final game at home to Louth that could ensure their promotion to division two
Wicklow proved far too strong for Donegal in their Allianz Hurling League Division 3 clash at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny on Sunday ending in a 0-21 to 0-14 point win.
Full-forward Pádraig Doyle was yet again the standout performer for Bosco O'Neill's Garden county charges, scoring 0–11, including nine placed balls. His final score – an over-the-shoulder effort – drew gasps of appreciation.
Wicklow were solid throughout. Andrew Kavanagh kept Donegal's attacking threat under lock and key. Strong performances from James Boland, Jack Phelan and John Henderson also highlighted a strong rearguard
The visitors suffered a blow when forward Seánie Germaine went off injured before the substitute Eoin McCormack contributed handsomely to the cause.
The visitors led 0–11 to 0–6 at half-time and remained in control after the break. Donegal struggled in front of goal, finishing with 16 wides compared to Wicklow’s 11, who made light of the log trek to the north-west.
A superb save from Wicklow goalkeeper Conor McNally denied Ryan Hilferty a late goal chance that might have sparked a comeback.
The result leaves Wicklow joint top of the Division 3 table. They now need a win over Louth in their final game to secure promotion, while Donegal must beat Roscommon to keep their own hopes alive.
