A suspension of standing orders during Monday’s monthly meeting if Wicklow County Council saw a motion unanimously supported calling for the local authority to write to the EPA to request an emergency environmental and human impact assessment be carried out on Ballinclare Quarry in Kilbride and surrounding environs over plans for a materials and recovery recycling facility.
Kilsaran Concrete Unlimited Company are set to lodge a planning application for a Strategic Infrastructure Development in the autumn, and the proposed development will involve the installation of a soil washing plant to produce construction grade sand and gravel from excess soil and stone imported from construction and development sites.
The motion was proposed by Cllr Peir Leonard, seconded by Cllr Joe Behan, due to concerns raised by the local community around the presence of asbestos and the quarry's recent water drainage operations and the risk of potential contamination into nearby lands and water and air quality.
