Mason Melia fast-tracked into Ireland squad for summer friendlies make his debut in friendly victory
Newtownmountkennedy’s very own Mason Melia stepped onto the international stage making his senior debut for Ireland in a 1–0 friendly win over Qatar at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium — in a moment that send wave of pride through Wicklow football folk and beyond.
The teenage forward, who's yet to make a first-team debut for his employer Tottenham Hotspur, (surely that's not far away?) was introduced in the second half as Ireland closed out a disciplined and hard-fought win in front of a lively home crowd spurred on by a tennis ball protest at the prospect of Ireland playing Israel in the Nations League.
The match itself was settled by a first-half strike from captain Nathan Collins, but attention quickly turned to the emergence of Ireland’s next generation, with Melia among the standout talking points.
His introduction was greeted with a roar from the stands at Aviva Stadium, as supporters recognised the significance of another Wicklow talent stepping onto the international scene.
Melia’s rise has been closely watched by football followers, with his move to Tottenham in January from St.Patrick's Athletic marking him out as one of the country’s most promising young forwards.
While his time on the pitch was limited, his debut represented more than minutes played — it was a statement of intent from Ireland’s evolving squad under Heimir Hallgrimsson, who continues to integrate fresh talent into the senior setup.
Melia’s debut also carried added Wicklow significance, as he joined fellow county man Liam Scales on the pitch last night.
The Celtic defender, an Ireland international and another proud export from the Garden County, lined out as part of a squad increasingly shaped by homegrown talent and a clear focus on the future.
The match also carried some drama, with a red card shown in the second half as Ireland were reduced to ten men when another new-boy Jack Moylan was shown a straight red card for a high lunge which Heimir Hallgrimsson took issue with in the youngster's second ever cap.
He was the first Irish player sent off at home in 15 years after Wexford man Kevin Doyle received his marching order.Qatar were also reduced to ten men in the final quarter with another red card.
In the stands, supporters staged a protest by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch, briefly interrupting play as security and officials moved quickly to clear the field over the impending prospect of playing Israel.
