Wildfire Battle Continues in France & Spain with Thousands of Holidays Cut Short

The most recent fires in the Wicklow Mountains are also the most significant of this summer, lasting over 10 days.

Wicklow holidaymakers impacted by wildfires abroad are being urged to exercise extreme caution.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising Irish there to follow the instructions of local authorities and contact the Irish Embassy if they need help. 

Thousands have been evacuated from campsites and holiday parks as wildfires continue to burn near Bordeaux.

Firefighters in France and Spain are battling to contain wildfires amid soaring temperatures and a fourth heat wave.  The fires are being described as the worst seen in living memory.

4,000 people have been forced to cut holidays short at Lacanau, near Bordeaux, under orders to evacuate camping sites.

Here in Wicklow, the National Parks and Wildlife Service is still monitoring Wicklow mountains for hotspots.

An orange level fire warning ended at midday today, and the wildfire that reignited in the Glencree area over the weekend appears to be extinguished.

Fire risks however remains high across Wicklow’s upland areas. Visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution when visiting the Wicklow countryside over the coming days and Bank Holiday weekend.
