Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow, John Brady, has expressed alarm over the escalating number of crimes committed by individuals on bail, particularly within the Wicklow/Wexford Garda Division.
Recent figures reveal that in 2024 alone, suspects on bail were implicated in 1,404 offenses in this division, marking a staggering increase of 308 incidents compared to 2022. Over the past three years, the total has reached 3,791 such crimes in the region.
Statewide, the situation is equally concerning. Data indicates that suspects on bail were involved in 40,348 crimes across Ireland in 2024, an increase of nearly 5,000 since 2022. Over the past three years, the cumulative number stands at an alarming 114,655 offenses committed by individuals released on bail.
Deputy Brady emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive review and reform of the current bail system:
