Wicklow Tailteann Cop Hero kicks ten points from play for Roundwood heroes as Blessington run out of road in Aughrim
Thirty-one years is a long time to wait for anything.........
An Tóchar waited that long for the Miley Cup on Sunday in Aughrim seeing off 2023 winners Blessington in style by 0-21 to 1-7 in a county final that turned into a procession after the break.
It is only the third senior title in the club’s history, and the first since 1995.
A day too big for the schedule
After one of Wicklow football’s greatest summers, nobody expected a quiet final.
The crowd poured into Echelon Park so steadily that throw-in was pushed back ten minutes past the planned start just to get everyone through the gates.
Blessington drew first blood
Éanna Nolan got An Tóchar on the board and Blessington’s Eoin Keogh answered.
Then Keogh made the play of the half, winning the ball and feeding Patrick O’Connor, who rattled the net for the game’s first goal, and its last. Kevin Quinn added a point and Blessington led 1-2 to 0-1.
Enter Conor Fee
Fee took over from there, and he did it the same way all day.
From the right corner he cut onto his left foot again and again. His first three points all came off turnovers, as Blessington were swamped through the middle third. O’Connor and Jack Cotter hit back as a shower of mist rolled over Aughrim, but An Tóchar finished the half the stronger side, outscoring them 0-4 to 0-2 to make it 0-9 to 1-6 at the break.

The second half: one-way traffic
An Tóchar needed no free and no two-pointer.
They kicked seven points without reply, and Blessington’s only second-half score was a point from substitute Mickey O’Connor in the 54th minute. It got worse for them when Anthony McLoughlin, one of their leaders, went off injured in the 52nd minute.
All five substitutes were already used, so Blessington played out the finish with 14 men.
Fee brought up his tenth point as the game went into additional time, five in each half, and he was named player of the match. Wing-back Gavin Fogarty, immense all afternoon, put the cap on it with a point of his own. An Tóchar outscored Blessington 12 points to one after the break.
