Three primary schools in Wicklow are among 170 nationwide that will share in 15 million euro worth of government funding to improve walking and cycling facilities for kids.
The funding forms part of the government's new Safe Routes to School programme announced earlier this year.
Works are set to start in the coming weeks at premises in Arklow and Greystones and include projects like new cycle lanes, upgraded footpaths and parking facilities.
Junior Transport Minister, Hildegarde Naughton, says more urban schools are included in the initial phase of the programme.
The schools in Wicklow that will benefit are Saint's Michael and Peter's Junior and St. John's National in Arklow and St Kevin's National in Greystones.
