Wicklow RNLI in consecutive call outs to help kayaker and motor boat crew

Wicklow RNLI came to the aid of a kayaker who capsized before helping the crew of a motor boat in difficulty in consecutive call outs last Thursday.

The volunteer crew's pagers first sounded just before 1pm on Thursday last (9 May) after the Coast Guard received a report that two kayakers had capsized in the River Vartry which flows into Wicklow Harbour.

The inshore lifeboat helmed by Paul Sillery was on scene within a couple of minutes of launching. Once on scene, the crew discovered that one casualty had made it ashore while a second casualty was still in the water.

The crew took the casualty who was safe and well from the water and brought them safely ashore and also recovered the capsized kayak.

The second call out of the afternoon occurred just before 3pm. The crew launched the all-weather lifeboat, the Joanna and Henry Williams to reports of crew on a 37ft motor vessel having difficulties with the boat's steering.

The vessel was located five miles to the north east of Wicklow Harbour. After making contact with the skipper, it was determined that he could make his own way towards the harbour.

The crew of the lifeboat escorted the vessel to the harbour, where an alongside tow was established to safely manoeuvre the vessel alongside the pier.

Speaking after the call outs, Connie O'Gara, Wicklow RNLI Deputy Lifeboat Press Officer said: ‘This was a busy afternoon for our crew. With us now entering the summer months, we would encourage those venturing towards the coast and on to the sea to plan ahead and go prepared. Check weather and tide times, carry a means of communication and let someone know where you are going and when you are due back. If you get into trouble or see anyone in difficulty, dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard."
