A gagging order preventing the identification of a garda accused of sexually assaulting a woman at Aughrim Garda Station in Co Wicklow has been lifted.
35-year-old William Ryan, who is stationed in Aughrim, is due to stand trial in June.
William Ryan is accused of falsely imprisoning and sexually assaulting the woman at Aughrim Garda Station on September 29th 2020.
He’s also facing accused of engaging in offensive conduct of a sexual nature at another location in Leinster between August 23rd 2019 and February 25th last year.
Last October, on the back of an application made by Mr Ryan’s legal team, a judge granted an order prohibiting him from being named.
That decision was challenged by lawyers for a number of news media organisations on the basis there was no justification for it.
In ruling in favour of the media, Judge Melanie Greally said there was no evidence that Mr Ryan’s right to a fair trial would be impeded by publication of his name.
A trial date was also set this morning for June 4th 2024.
