Wicklow County Council Provide Update On Reopening Of Bray To Greystones Cliffwalk

In a statement Green Party TD Steven Matthews welcomed the progress made by Wicklow County Council on re-opening the Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk.

“There are two challenges facing the cliff walk.  At the Bray end it is rock fall from above the walk that is the problem and at the Greystones end the problem is slippage of the path. Having engaged with Wicklow CoCo and Irish Rail earlier this year to ask that they re-double efforts to make the path safe and re-open the Cliff Walk, the solutions to both issues are now progressing at much speedier pace.

“I am very pleased that Wicklow CoCo has really stepped up and, has now confirmed that they have made progress on both issues. There is new land being acquired at the Greystones end to reroute the path and I am hopeful that the purchase can be completed by the end of this year.

At the Bray end, a consultant expert was brought in, and they have assessed the problem and prepared a detailed report on the remedial works required. This work will provide rock bolts and rock netting to retain and reduce rock falls.

“Works on the cliff walk will require the consent and co-operation of Irish Rail and I am continuing to work closely with Wicklow County Council and Irish Rail to ensure that contracts and agreements will be progressed to start the works.

“This progress by Wicklow is very welcome and I have offered my ongoing assistance with the Department of Transport and Department of Local Government to ensure that funding and co-operation can be maintained to get the cliff walk back up and running as soon as possible for the thousands of Bray, Greystones residents and visitors to that enjoy this beautiful scenic walking route.”
