There’s a change this year to the traditional Christmas Eve remembrance event which take place in Dun Laoghaire every year, to honour those who have lost their lives at sea .
This ceremony remembers all those who have lost their lives at sea around Ireland, including 15 lifeboat volunteers, who died on Christmas Eve in 1895, when their boat capsized in gale force winds in Dublin bay, while attempting to rescue those on board the SS Palme that had run aground off Blackrock in County Dublin.
The ceremony usually takes place at the end of the East Pier, with music, a blessing and an account of the 1895 tragedy.
This year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the pier event has been cancelled, however two wreaths will be placed at sea by the lifeboat crew, and the service will be available online later today on Dun Laoghaire RNLI’s Facebook page.
