Have Your Say on the New Wicklow Greenway: A proposed 25km Route from Greystones to Wicklow
Residents and visitors now have the chance to provide feedback on plans for the new Wicklow Greenway, a proposed 25-kilometre trail connecting Greystones to Wicklow town.
The consultation aims to gather public input on the route, which is designed to be mostly off-road and traffic-free, linking key rail stations and existing cycling and walking networks.
Officials say the greenway will balance stunning coastal scenery with environmental protection, deliberately avoiding sensitive habitats wherever possible.
A public display event is scheduled today from 4 to 8pm at Greystones Library on Mill Road, offering an opportunity to view the proposed plans and share your thoughts with project consultants.

Route Planning and Options
During January’s Wicklow County Council meeting, consultants outlined potential route corridors under consideration. Each corridor covers a roughly 600-metre-wide area, with three main options evaluated:
-
Coastal route corridor – Following the shoreline to maximize scenic views.
-
Field boundary corridor – Navigating through inland farmland.
-
Regional road corridor – Running alongside existing roadways.
The study area was divided into three sections for detailed evaluation: Greystones to Kilcoole, Kilcoole to Five Mile Point, and Five Mile Point to Wicklow. Each section was assessed independently as part of the Stage 1 evaluation.
Emerging Preferred Route
Following a Stage 2 assessment, an Emerging Preferred Route has been identified. The route stretches approximately 24.8 kilometres, with around 83% designated as an off-road shared path, offering a high-quality, largely traffic-free experience for cyclists, walkers, and recreational users.
The route integrates both coastal and inland sections to combine scenic value with environmental sensitivity, steering clear of designated habitats wherever possible. It also connects directly to Greystones, Kilcoole, and Wicklow rail stations and links with existing and planned active travel infrastructure, providing convenient options for both commuting and leisure.
Wicklow County Council, in collaboration with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, is currently progressing the project through the Options Selection Stage (Phase 2), with public consultation playing a key role in shaping the final design.
Residents are encouraged to attend the event or submit feedback online to help shape the future of the Wicklow Greenway.
