The former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern addressed an online meeting of more than 100 Fianna Fáil grassroots members last night.
Mr Ahern, who resigned from the party because of the findings of the Mahon Tribunal, told the meeting, which included several sitting TDs, that an Irish unity referendum should happen by the end of the decade “when the work is done.”
According to the Irish Examiner Bertie Ahern’s presence is being seen by some members of the party as an act of defiance against the current Taoiseach and party leader Micheál Martin, who has repeatedly refused to consider Allowing Bertie Ahern Back in to the party.
