Wicklow’s hopes of promotion to Division 3 ended in gut-wrenching fashion on Sunday as Longford staged a stunning comeback at Pearse Park to snatch a last-gasp 2-21 to 2-20 victory to secure promotion at the Garden County’s expense in agonising fashion.
In a match packed with drama and tension for Wicklow supporters, Daniel Reynolds’ last-minute point sealed the victory for Longford, who now join Carlow in next weekend’s Division 4 final and a dose of deja-vu for Wicklow footballers in missing out on the spoils of success at the death as seen many times before.
Wicklow had looked in control for much of the game. After 23 minutes, Oisin McConville’s side had raced into a commanding 1-8 to 0-2 lead. Although Dylan Farrell added a couple of points for the visitors, a goal from Oisin McGraynor before halftime extended Wicklow’s advantage to 2-9 to 0-9.
The Garden County men continued to dominate early in the second half. Points from Chris O’Brien, Dean Healy, and Kevin Quinn pushed the lead to 2-17 to 0-13 by the 53rd minute, seemingly putting promotion within reach.
But Longford refused to fold. A goal from Oisin O’Toole in the 61st minute sparked a remarkable revival. After Healy’s point for Wicklow, Patrick Moran’s finish leveled the scoreboard, and subsequent scores from Cian Brady, Joseph Hagan, and Reynolds completed the stunning turnaround, leaving Wicklow stunned on their home turf.
For Wicklow, it was a game of near misses and what-ifs—a season of effort undone in the closing moments, leaving the county to regroup and focus on next year’s Division 4 challenge.
