The academic, who lives in Bray, is also accused of illegally accessing student data on the UCD network.
A UCD lecturer, with an address in Wicklow, is accused of harassing students and unlawfully accessing their personal data.
It's alleged the 53-year-old was hacking into the university’s computer system.
Dr Stephen Davis was arrested this morning at his home at Elgin Wood in Bray. The Assistant Professor at UCD’s School of Archaeology, was formally charged and brought before Dublin District Court.
He is facing 148 charges arising from an investigation led by the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau on foot of a complaint made in late 2023.
The academic is accused of using malware, to illegally access student data on the UCD network and external networks. He is also facing 51 charges of harassment.
Dr Davis was granted bail subject to certain conditions, including that he doesn’t contact any of his alleged victims, stays away from his local library in Bray, and hands over his British Passport.
