The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau are currently investigating a €2 Million money laundering fraud involving around 200 "Money Mule” accounts.
It’s believed some students are facilitating criminals by allowing their bank accounts to be used as part of a scheme to legitimise illegal cash.
Gardai have launched a fraud awareness campaign on college campuses where they will engage with students and staff to highlight the seriousness of the crime which can carry a prison sentence of up to fourteen years and impact on future career opportunities abroad.
