Wicklow star wowing the crowds with precision and skills at the World Cup in Brazil to secure a medal bout
Wicklow boxer Daina Moorehouse is just one victory away from securing at least a bronze medal at the World Cup of Boxing in Brazil after a confident and composed start to her campaign.
The Enniskerry Boxing Club fighter has already recorded two wins in the 51kg division and now steps into today’s quarter-final knowing victory guarantees a place on the podium.
Hard-Fought Progression to the Last Eight
Moorehouse booked her quarter-final spot with a narrow 4–1 split decision win over Poland’s Natalia Kuczewska in a bout that went right to the wire.
The scorecards reflected just how tight it was — 29:28, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29 — but Moorehouse did enough to edge through and keep her medal hopes alive.
It marked her second win of the competition and continued a steady progression through the draw.
“It took me a while to get into it” – Moorehouse Reflects
Speaking after her win, Moorehouse admitted she needed time to settle into the fight but was pleased with how she managed the pressure.
“I felt like it took me a while to get into the fight, but I was up on the scorecards. The referee told us to box two or three times, but it was all about patience today.”
Despite a slow start, she believes she is improving with every outing in the tournament.
“Back in tomorrow, and each day I’ll just get better and better.”
Quarter-Final Clash for a Medal Place
Moorehouse now faces a major test against Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in today’s quarter-final.
A win would guarantee at least bronze and mark a significant step forward on the international stage for the Enniskerry boxer.
Opportunity Knocks on the World Stage
With two wins already secured, Moorehouse enters the bout with growing momentum and the chance to turn a strong tournament start into a career-defining result.
Victory today would not only secure a medal — it would underline her emergence as a serious contender at elite international level.
