Codling Wind Park has announced a 25pc reduction in the number of turbines required for the project which will be located approximately 13-22 kilometres off Greystones and Wicklow town on the Wicklow coast.It was previously thought that around 100 turbines would need to be constructed, but it has been confirmed, with the project’s final design and layout, that a maximum of 75 and a minimum of 60 turbines would now be required. The minimum proposed turbine tip height has also been set at 288 metres or a maxim to be locatedum of 314 metres.Despite the reduction in the number of proposed wind turbines, the project will still generate 1,300 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity, enough to power over one million homes, which amounts to 48pc of all permanent dwellings in Ireland.The original estimate for the number of required wind turbines was around 440, but huge advances in advances in wind turbine technology, and more efficient turbine models, combined with a more detailed understanding of the wind farm site, means a maximum of 75 turbines will now be required, which is a reduction of 83pc on the original number proposed.The project is a 50/50 joint venture between Fred Olsen Seawind and EDF Renewables.
