A new Oireachtas committee on defence and security will probe cyber safeguards in Irish institutions amid growing concern within the Government that Ireland could be left exposed. The committee will examine how Ireland can be prepared for cyber attacks. It will form part of the Government’s response to a fast-evolving AI landscape.
“It is vital that we ensure the defence and security of critical assets in the State and in Irish waters,” TD Malcolm Byrne said.
“We need to prioritise that. Cyber security and hybrid threats have to be taken seriously. An Oireachtas committee focused on these challenges will be very welcome.” Previous governments have established committees on foreign affairs and defence. The new committee will be separate to that.A government source said they expect committees to be formed and chairpersons to be announced next week.
