Wicklow Social Democrat TD Jennifer Whitmore  has raised the plight of those secondary school students still without a place in the Greystones District with the Tánaiste in the Dail. Deputy Whitmore said, “In the Dail today, I took the opportunity to highlight the 20-30 students from Greystones who are still without a school place for September 2024.“Despite a commitment last month from the Department of Education that parents would be informed of where their children would be allocated a place within a matter of weeks, there is still no formal update from them.

At the time, the Department said sufficient accommodation was present within the current schools in the area, so I’m not sure where the hold-up is. An allocation must be done as soon as possible to prevent any further anxiety for both children and parents.“I acknowledge and welcome Greystones Community College’s decision to make 50 additional places available. However, this was only the first tranche of places, and 20-30 children still haven’t been allocated a place.“These children are the last students in the town to know where they will attend secondary in September.

This is incredibly stressful for them, particularly when hundreds of their peers are excited about their transition to secondary and the new chapter opening to them.”Whitmore went on to say, “In his response, the Tánaiste recognised how stressful this would be for those children, and he committed to raising it with the Minister. Hopefully, this will help hurry the decision up and finally answer the question for those parents and children.”
