The Justice Minister Wicklow TD Simon Harris says he’d be in favour of changing legislation if necessary, so that people guilty of assaulting a Garda would face greater sanctions.
It comes in the wake of an attack on Gardaí in West Dublin this week, in which one officer was injured and a number of patrol cars were damaged.
The Garda Representative Association has renewed its call for more protections for its members and to establish a task force to address the issue.
Minister Harris says increasing garda numbers and boosting legislation could help clamp down on these assaults.
The Tánaiste has condemned recent violence on Gardaí and says communities need to be supported to stamp out this behaviour.
As Defence Minister, Micheál Martin ruled out bringing in the army to deal with these attacks.
