Wicklow Man Appears In Court Charged With Reckless Driving In Dublin

A court has heard how a Wicklow man drank vodka and took cocaine an hour before crashing into a Dublin Bus.

34-year-old Cillian O'Toole, of Trooperstown in Roundwood appeared before Dublin District Court earlier.


Mr. O'Toole, who is a father of two, admitted to the court he consumed both vodka and cocaine before driving down the wrong side of the road and colliding with a bus in the capital.

It happened on the 21st of November last year, at Greenhills Road in Dublin 12.

Mr. O'Toole was disqualified from driving for two years and fined 900 euro after pleading guilty to a drink driving offence and careless driving in connection with the incident.

Judge Treasa Kelly today heard he told a Garda who attended the scene he drank vodka an hour beforehand and had taken cocaine "30 minutes ago."

Pleading for leniency, his solicitor said the father of two had been in the throes of addiction, and the he court was shown letters from a treatment centre and was told Mr. O’Toole had relapsed but “is clean now”.

Judge Kelly said it was a serious matter and which “could have been a lot worse”, and Mr. O'Toole, who made no reply when charged, had five prior convictions for traffic offences, a theft offence for “making off without payment”, and one for drug possession.
