Wicklow Gardaí issues urgent warning to stay vigilant on roads this Christmas after a year of rising fatalities.
Gardaí in Wicklow are warning locals to take road safety seriously this festive season, after a tragic year that has already seen 180 lives lost on Irish roads.
That grim figure is a significant increase from last year, leaving many families without loved ones for Christmas.
Bray Garda Sergeant John Fitzpatrick has highlighted the major contributors to accidents this year:
Drink and drug driving – including alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and other substances
Failure to wear seatbelts – simple choices that can mean the difference between life and death
Distracted or reckless driving – especially on busy roads during the holiday season
“These are preventable tragedies. Every time someone chooses to drive under the influence or skips their seatbelt, they’re putting themselves and everyone else at risk,” said Sergeant Fitzpatrick.
Garda Enforcement Efforts
To combat the risks, local Gardaí have ramped up road safety enforcement across the division:
1,700 checkpoints conducted last week alone
147 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Round-the-clock coverage throughout the Christmas period
“We will be out day and night, ensuring the roads are as safe as possible,” Sergeant Fitzpatrick said.
How Locals Can Protect Themselves
Residents are urged to make responsible choices this Christmas:
Never drive under the influence – if you’ve been drinking or using drugs, get a lift, taxi, or plan an alternative way home.
Don’t get in a car with someone under the influence – speak up, refuse, or arrange your own safe transport.
Always wear a seatbelt – every trip, no exceptions.
Drive attentively – slow down, avoid distractions, and give extra space on busy roads.
“Your choices matter—not just to you, but to everyone else sharing the roads. Slow down, stay alert, and make sure you and your loved ones get home safely this Christmas,” Fitzpatrick urged.
A Local Appeal
Gardaí are asking the community to look out for one another during the festive period. By staying vigilant and making safe choices, residents can help prevent further tragedy and ensure that everyone enjoys a safe holiday season.
