He was proposed by the outgoing Minister of state, Andrew Doyle, who confirmed that he was not seeking a seat in the Seanad, while outgoing Minister for Health Simon Harris has endorsed the nomination.
Deputy Cullen, who lives in Newtownmountkennedy, was a poll topper in the local elections last year when he secured more than 2,200 votes.
Last week Fianna Fail’s former TD in Wicklow Pat Casey announced that he would be seeking a Seanad seat.
