The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a warning to swimmers in Bray to expect poor water quality across the next four days
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a warning to swimmers in Bray to expect poor water quality across the weekend as heavy rainfall is predicted to cause sewage outfalls.
With forecasters predicting in the region of 10mm of rain in the area on Friday and Saturday, the EPA has placed a temporary bathing restriction on Bray South Promenade due to the threat of possible pollution.
This pollution is likely to come into the bathing waters due to the activation of Bray Sewage Pumping Station Storm Water Outfalls.
The EPA is advising swimmers to avoid swallowing or splashing water, to wash hands after touching the water, to avoid entering the water with an open wound, and to avoid the water if pregnant or suffering from a weakened immune system.
Though their warning stresses that should a mistake be made “higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness”.
The risk of pollution is likely to last until Sunday, June 16.
Microbiological water samples will be taken and an update published when test results have been examined.
