Under rare, perfectly clear atmospheric conditions—often during hot summer weather or temperature inversions—the silhouettes of the Wicklow Mountains can be seen from the Welsh coast
The Wicklow Mountains made a surprise appearance across the Irish Sea this week, after a Welsh musician captured a rare view of the east coast skyline from the Llŷn Peninsula in north Wales.
British folk singer and writer Matthew Crampton shared the video on Instagram on Monday evening, showing the Wicklow Mountains visible from Tudweiliog during the recent spell of exceptional sunshine and high pressure weather.
Within 48 hours, the clip had attracted more than 200,000 views online.
Crampton, who has spent decades living between London and the Welsh coast, said sightings of Ireland from the peninsula are extremely uncommon.
“My whole life I have only seen Ireland three or four times from here,” he said.
But this week’s conditions created something special.
“I looked back and I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was Holy Island where Holyhead is on Anglesey, but no — it was Ireland and it had come to say hello.”
The musician also joked that he owed the Wicklow Mountains an “official apology” after mistakenly referring to them as “hills” in the original video.
The stunning visibility was helped by the prolonged high-pressure system sitting over Ireland and Britain in recent days.
..........''In 50 years on Llyn, I've never seen Ireland appear so close. I filmed this last night (Monday) near Tudweiliog at 10pm (after some fab storytelling at @felin_uchaf) but this ain't no story. Very occasionally you can see the hills of Wicklow. But to see so much more of Ireland, all laid out clear and close, well that's a rare treat. Unless, of course, Ireland just took a surprise shift eastwards...
