Upgrade Works Completed At Blessington Wastewater Treatment Plant

Uisce Éireann working in partnership with Wicklow County Council, prioritised plans to upgrade the Blessington Wastewater Treatment Plant to safeguard the environment and support social and economic development in the area.

The works have now been successfully completed as a result of this significant investment by Uisce Éireann and will increase the capacity of the plant to serve a population equivalent (PE) of up to 9,000 in a town of just over 4,000 people.

This will enable future growth and safeguard the environment by ensuring compliance with national and EU legislation.

The project involved the construction of a new primary treatment system including a pump station, upgrades to the existing aeration tanks, and the installation of a new odour control system.

Treatment processes at the existing wastewater treatment plant in Blessington have also been upgraded.

Uisce Éireann is progressing with wastewater projects in the following areas across Wicklow to provide new and adequate wastewater infrastructure for the county:

  • Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant: This project marks another major milestone in Uisce Éireann’s work to end the unacceptable practice of discharging untreated sewage into our waterways and sea. More than half of all raw sewage discharges have been eliminated since the establishment of Uisce Éireann and Arklow is the largest remaining town without treatment. The commencement of this project and the major progress made throughout 2021/2022 means that we are on track to eliminate the vast majority of raw sewage discharges by 2025.
  • Avoca Wastewater Treatment Plant: Uisce Éireann was recently granted planning permission for a new wastewater treatment plant in Avoca to end the unacceptable practice of discharging untreated sewage into our waterways. The procurement phase is currently underway with construction to follow.
  • Aughrim Wastewater Treatment Plant: Has been selected for upgrade as part of the Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme (STVGP). This investment in the local wastewater infrastructure will provide additional capacity for the development of new homes, while ensuring that wastewater continues to be treated to an appropriate standard. The project is continuing through the necessary stages including design, detailed planning, procurement and approvals.
  • Tinahely Wastewater Treatment Plant: Project at early stages of progression but upgrade will have the capacity for a population equivalent (PE) of 1,200 under Uisce Éireann’s Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme (STVGP).
  • Ballyconnell Wastewater Treatment Plant Opening: An historic occasion for Ballyconnell back in June 2022 as Uisce Éireann and Wicklow County Council officially opened a new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility following a €600,000 investment to safeguard a sustainable future for the town.
