Uisce Eireann Issue Appeal With A Third Of Irish People Disengaged With Water Conservation

The appeal follows the warm spell in May when more than 680 million litres of water was used in the Dublin area alone in a single day

People in Wicklow are being urged to play their part in protecting water supplies as Uisce Éireann launches a new conservation campaign.

The appeal comes after a survey found almost a third of people in Ireland have little interest in or awareness of water conservation.

It follows a surge in demand during last month's warm weather, when water use across the Greater Dublin Area, which includes parts of Wicklow, reached a record 685 million litres in a single day.

Uisce Éireann says while reservoirs, rivers and groundwater sources recovered following a wet winter, pressure can quickly build during dry spells as demand increases.

Head of Water Operations Margaret Attridge says water security cannot be taken for granted.

"While reservoirs, rivers and ground water sources recovered earlier this year, that does not guarantee water security for all areas in the months ahead. Our water system continues to face challenges from rising demand, and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns."

She says even where supplies are currently stable, warm weather can quickly create difficulties.

"That's why we're reminding people that every individual water saving action counts and using only what you need really helps to make a positive contribution that can benefit everyone."

Ms Attridge says the findings of the latest survey highlight the need for greater public awareness.

"A recent survey carried out for Uisce Éireann found that almost a third of people had no interest or awareness in water conservation. We're committed to building greater understanding of, and respect for, our precious water resources and that's why we are launching this campaign today."

Households are being encouraged to check for leaks, avoid using hoses where possible, take shorter showers and ensure washing machines and dishwashers are fully loaded before use.
