Two Wicklow Sports Projects To Receive Extra Funding Worth Over €1 Million

Wicklow Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre and Charlesland Athletics Track both receive top up grant allocations worth over a million under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF)

Wicklow Minister Simon Harris has welcomed two major Sports Projects in Wicklow getting a top up payment under the LSSIF. The First allocations of LSSIF were announced back in 2020.

This week, additional funding is coming to two major Sports Projects in Wicklow to help them deliver the projects.

Speaking on this news, Minister Harris said “I am delighted to confirm both the Wicklow Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre and Charlesland Athletics Track are both in line for a major funding boost.

“Both the pandemic and construction inflation have slowed down the delivery of certain projects and it’s crucial the Government steps in to provide some uplift and help deliver really important community projects like these sporting facilities in a faster manner.

“This top up payment speaks to our ambition to develop sport in the community and at an elite level. These grants will help develop and maintain really important public amenities in our county.

“I’m really proud as a Wicklow TD and a member of this Government that we were able to deliver this top up payment.

“Wicklow Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre originally received €864,177 in funding under the LSSIF in 2020, that allocation has now been topped up with an extra €932,423, close to an extra million, bringing the total allocation to €1,796,600. This is a major development which will be welcome by so many in the community and the County Council.

“Charlesland Athletics Track originally received €309,642 in funding under the LSSIF in 2020, that allocation has now been toped up by an extra €126,390, bringing the total allocation to €436,032. This is also a major sport project that will be welcome by residents is Greystones when it’s completed.

“Investments like these in our communities are essential. These sport projects will get people out doing more physical activity, particularly it will help at a grassroots level develop the potential for elite sportspeople in the county.

Minister Harris concluded: “I’m also delighted to say the very successful LSSIF will be open for a new round of applications in the first half of 2024, with dates and terms to be published soon.”
