Wicklow Commuters Stuck in Traffic gridlock as Fianna Fáil TD Slams Government Rail Plans
Wicklow commuters along the M11 are facing worsening delays and overcrowded trains, with Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne warning that the government is failing to provide a viable public transport alternative.
Speaking in the Dáil this week, Byrne highlighted the strain on Wicklow’s transport network, saying:
“If we are going to reduce our own dependence on fossil fuels and get people out of cars, we've got to provide them with a realistic public transport alternative.”
He painted a stark picture of daily commuting: “The M11 is increasingly becoming a car park every morning. Unlike a number of other commuter routes, we don’t have a realistic rail alternative. We have fewer services, worse rolling stock, and more overcrowding than any other rail service.”
Byrne also criticised the government’s recent rail project prioritisation strategy, saying it made no commitments for improvements to the Rosslare line, and even considered abandoning plans to develop and reopen the Rosslare–Waterford route.
“If we are to provide a real alternative and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and car use, there has to be a real public transport option,”
Byrne said. “I want assurances, Taoiseach, that the Department of Transport has not abandoned rail commuters along the Rosslare line.”
For commuters in Wicklow towns like Greystones, Bray, and Arklow, Byrne’s warnings reflect a daily reality of overcrowded trains and gridlocked roads. Without investment in rail, the M11 will remain congested, and many commuters will have no realistic alternative to driving.
The TD’s comments come amid growing calls for improved public transport infrastructure in Ireland, particularly for commuter belts outside Dublin where car dependence remains high.

- Outdated or insufficient carriages
- Lack of flexible options for early or late commuters

I am deeply frustrated by the lack of investment in the Rosslare Rail Line and the need to provide a realistic rail alternative to commuters from #Wexford and #Wicklow
