Declan Meehan was the first person to interview the Taoiseach on radio.
The Taoiseach noted Declan’s passion for social justice, giving the people of Wicklow the voice they needed to be listened to
Speaking on on air this morning Taoiseach Simon Harris said:
“I'm really honoured to be in East Coast radio station this morning and to be invited to participate in this programme celebrating the great career of Wicklow’s Voice, Declan Meehan.
“This man has provided 30 years of incredible service to East Coast FM, to public service, broadcasting, to public debate and discourse.
“Declan has become an institution in our country and a living legend in County Wicklow.
“It was really important to me to come in today and recognise his career and this milestone.
“Declan and I have through many years had very difficult and tricky interviews on the issues of the day but he has always been extraordinarily fair and passionate.
“Declan is someone with a huge sense of social justice who has championed issues that matter to people across Wicklow, giving people across Wicklow a voice and adopting causes that have made our county a better place.
“On behalf of people right across county Wicklow, I just wanted to be here today to say thank you.
“Like Hozier, Declan was the first person to ever interview me on radio.
Taoiseach Simon Harris concluded:
“When I got involved in politics as a young, moody teenager being irked about things in my hometown of Greystones and campaigning around autism facilities it was Declan who gave me the space to highlight those issues.
“I want to wish Declan a huge congratulations and thank him and his family for the last 30 years of service to public broadcasting.
