The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced today that the country's schools, colleges and childcare facilities are to close from 6 o’clock this evening, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Indoor gatherings of more than 100 people are banned, however a maximum outdoor gathering of 500 people will be allowed.
Where possible, people are being urged to work remotely and the Taoiseach has urged the public and businesses to take a sensible approach to coronavirus. Public transport will continue to operate and Restaurants bars and shops can stay open.
Leo Varadkar made the announcement in Washington DC where he is visiting as part of the St Patrick's Day celebrations.
The measures announced today will remain in place until the 29th of March.
