A rare visitor attracted a lot of attention in Wicklow yesterday.
The Great White Pelican was spotted in the Avoca river, close to the 19 Arches bridge in Arklow.
Although native to South East Europe, Asia and Africa, the Pelican seen in South Wicklow arrived from a less exotic climate.
According to the Irish Times, management at Fota Wildlife in Cork have confirmed the bird escaped from their park. However it has caused a bit of a stir as it appears this is the furthest north that a pelican has been seen in the wild.
