No Hedgerow Cutting For Wicklow From 1st March.

The Wicklow Uplands Council is reminding the public that hedgerow cutting is prohibited from March 1st until August 31st

The Wicklow Uplands Council is reminding the public that hedgerow cutting is prohibited from March 1st until August 31st –  and the importance of preserving these important ecosystems. From March 1st to August 31st, hedgerow cutting will be prohibited, as this is a critical period for nesting birds as well as other wildlife.Hedgerows provide essential habitats for local wildlife, are natural windbreakers, and are vital to biodiversity – to name but a few of their essential purposes. In order to keep these hedgerows healthy and fit-for-purpose, the Wicklow Uplands Council are urging people to manage their hedgerows through periodic trimming as opposed to cutting them back entirely.Taking to social media, the group have suggested: “Rather than indiscriminate cutting, it’s important to assess each hedgerow individually, taking into account factors such as wildlife habitats, nesting seasons, and the overall biodiversity of the area.By refraining from cutting hedgerows between March 1st and August 31st, we demonstrate our commitment to preserving the delicate balance of nature. It’s a small but significant gesture that can have a positive impact on the environment and help safeguard the future of our upland countryside.”
