New Special Needs Classroom Announced For St. Mary’s College, Arklow

Taoiseach Simon Harris has today confirmed St. Mary's College in Arklow is getting a new classroom to provide for a special class for children with special education needs   

St Mary’s College has also had approval from the Department of Education for the reconfiguration of a mainstream classroom and two special education teaching rooms for one to one teaching or group work.

The Taoiseach has welcomed these developments which will help dozens of children with special educational needs

 Speaking today, Taoiseach Simon Harris said:

“Today is a really positive step for St Mary’s College in Arklow and all the students who attend.

“I know from speaking to parents across the county and in Arklow that there is a growing need for extra capacity for children with special educational needs.

“These developments will be of huge benefit to the school and will make for a more inclusive environment for all students.

Taoiseach Simon Harris added:

“It is so important to me that our educational facilities across the county and across the country are for everyone, no matter who they are and no matter if they have additional needs.

“As Taoiseach I will continue to do everything and will pull every lever at my disposal to ensure children with educational needs have the right level of services, especially in education.

“I want to thank all who have been involved so far in getting these projects over the line.

“As a TD for Wicklow I will continue to seek regular updates on the progress being made regarding in St Mary’s College, Arklow.

 Note on terminology 

1x SEN/SEN base is a new classroom to provide a special class for children with special education needs   

A SET room is a special education teaching room for one to one teaching or group work.  

1 x MCR is a mainstream classroom. 

 A SEN reconfiguration is usually re designation or renovating an existing room to accommodation a class for students with special educational needs.
